The Shire London this year played host to The EFF Charity Golf Cup, an event run in aid of The England Footballers Foundation. The day offered up the chance for the players to meet some of the England football team as well as enjoy a unique trick shot demonstration from Kevin Carpenter. Situated just north of London, the ‘Masters’ at The Shire is the UK’s only Seve Ballesteros designed golf course,

For the second year running, the day took advantage of the revolutionary VPAR Live Golf Scoring system allowing the players to follow the scores on handheld scorepads setting up a nail biting finale for those on the courses as well as spectators in the clubhouse and live online.

Current England players Jermain Defoe, Jake Livermore and Michael Dawson joined England Footballers Foundation Ambassadors on the day, ex-players: Ray Wilkins, Dean Ashton and Mark Bright, as well as BBC Football Focus host Dan Walker. As play commenced, it was Dan Walker and ex-England international Dean Ashton who made a solid start to their round and were hovering near the top of the leaderboard for a large part of the day.

Team 1966 held top spot for most of the day thanks to an all-round team effort but especially Oli Shipton who played some scintillating golf on the back 9 making birdies at holes 10 and 11. The Met Group, following their competitor’s progress on their scorepads, made a charge late on in the day with a fine performance from Daniel Hiral – the competition was on.

The Met Group, chasing Team 1966, held their nerve striking further blows on holes 12 and 13 to take the lead at the top. With all the teams watching the leaderboard in anticipation from the clubhouse, a birdie on the final hole from Bryan Pierterson wasn’t enough as Team 1966 succumbed to the leaderboard pressure. The Met Group were crowned champions.

About England Footballers Foundation

The England Footballers Foundation was established in 2007 when the players decided to donate all of their England match fees and time to good causes. This was the start of a lasting legacy for future England squads to come. This year the players were pleased to welcome guests from our three chosen charity partners Rays of Sunshine, The British Forces Foundation and The Bobby Moore Fund at Cancer Research UK.
