The inaugural Celebrity Cup this year saw 24 celebrities battle it out over two days representing England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales at The Celtic Manor Resort. The 9 hole course was set up using a combination of holes from two of their championship courses, The Montogermie and The Roman Road.
Six celebrities on each team including stars such as: Sir Steve Redgrave, Rob Brydon, Alan Hansen and Dragon’s Den Peter Jones played in a Ryder Cup style format in what was a fiercely competitive contest. Not only was the cup up for grabs but national pride was at stake.
The competition this year took advantage of the revolutionary VPAR Live Golf Scoring system allowing the celebrities to follow the scores on handheld scorepads. Spectators on the course could follow the action live on their smartphones and those sitting in the grandstand could enjoy the large TV Leaderboard situated on the 9th green.
Saturday started in typically Welsh weather conditions to really test the ability and waterproofs of the celebrities. It was Scotland who flew out of the blocks assuming a commanding lead after round 1 by taking 17.5 points from Wales out of a possible 27. The home team struggled on day one despite the enthusiastic crowd with Matt Johnson and Iwan Thomas especially wayward.
As Sunday arrived Ireland needed a big win over Wales for a place in the final but succumbed to the leaderboard pressure. After 3 rounds only half a point separated England and Scotland who were to line up again for the final. England took the momentum into the final and started strongly with captain’s pick Mike Tindall and Peter Jones taking the lead against Jamie Murray and Kenny Logan.
However Scotland fought back hard chipping away at England’s lead, meaning it all came down to the last. Standing on the 9th tee England knew they were only leading by one shot as they consulted their handsets – pressure was mounting on both teams. The spectators lining the final fairway and in the grandstand watched in anticipation knowing that it all hung on the final hole.
Scotland’s Jamie Murray birdied the last to win the hole and draw level taking it to a chip off which saw Scotland again hold their nerve to be crowned champions.
A thrilling finale to a great weekend.
