To celebrate the University of St Andrews’ 600th anniversary, 72 golfers from around the world descended on the home of golf to compete in a 3 day tournament. The event took place across 3 of Scotland’s finest courses; Kingsbarns, the Duke’s and the Old Course which all offered a combination of stunning views across the coast as well as challenging conditions to test golfers of all abilities.
The official scoring for this year’s event was provided by VPAR Live Golf Scoring, the revolutionary and world leading live scoring experience, allows players to follow a real-time leaderboard on handheld scorepads setting up a nail biting finale for those on the course, spectators in the clubhouse and supporters live online in their home countries.
As the groups got underway on Friday morning the sun began to come out and with the wind dying down, it indicated potential for some low scores. Within moments of the start, Ron Morron aced the 190 yard 2nd scoring a net albatross which sparked Ryder Cup styled USA cheers that could be heard from the clubhouse as they followed the action on the live leaderboards. As the day progressed, scoring continued to improve with the weather and by the close of play on day 1 it was Team Locke, which included ex-Tour Pro Lennie Clements, who finished with the impressive score of 91 points.
Going into day 2 conditions took a turn for the worse. Hot on the heels of first round leaders Team Locke were Team Jones, only 1 point back, and 3 other groups in the chasing pack on 87 points. Despite the poor conditions, Team Locke forged ahead with another solid round of 96 points, giving them a 10 point lead from Team Jones going into the final round.
The scene was set on the final day at the famous Old Course in front of the historic clubhouse in typical links conditions. The groups went out in reverse order and were put to the test straight away playing into the strong head winds of the 1st hole making scoring difficult. As the chasing teams saw the lead continue to grow on their VPAR scorepads they started to fall away leaving the path clear for Team Locke, who put together a near faultless performance across the three rounds, to take 1st place with an overall score of 276 stableford points.
A historic day for all involved.
