VPAR brings Ultimate Golf Experience to World Invitational Father & Son Tournament

The World Invitational Father & Son Tournament this year marked its 24th year at the spectacular Waterville Golf Links in Kerry, Ireland, with 80 teams from all corners of the globe competing for the much coveted title.

The live scoring for this year’s event was once again provided by VPAR Live Golf Scoring, the revolutionary and world leading live scoring experience that allows players to follow a real-time leaderboard on handheld scorepads as well as enabling spectators in the clubhouse and supporters live online to view everyone’s progress.

Amongst the early starters, making the most of the favourable conditions, were Scottish pairing Martin and Jamie Gilbert. A spectacular round of 42 points saw the pair from Royal Aberdeen Golf Club sitting as leaders in the clubhouse for most of the day before an impressive closing stretch from the O’Shea’s that included an eagle, birdie, birdie finish saw them draw level at the top of the leaderboard.

Day 2 saw an unlikely shift in the weather as teams were forced to don the waterproofs for the scotch foursomes format. Scoring in the morning was tough and saw the overnight leaders slip down the leaderboard after a disappointing 23 points. Amongst the late starters were Dermot and Brett Desmond who produced a fine display of golf for 38 points to take the outright lead with the Irish pairing of Robert and Rudi Butler hot on their heels. A solid round of 37 points was enough to see the Butler’s tied for the lead heading into the final round. The scene was set for the final day.

A strong finish from famous racehorse owner JP McManus and son Kieran saw the pairing lead in the clubhouse with a combined 118 points, a long nervous wait ensued. With only two teams left on the course, the players gathered around the live leaderboard in the clubhouse to see the final scores come through. A quick glance at their VPAR scorepad meant the Butler’s knew they needed nothing worse than a par at the last to take the title. Young Rudi Butler, having played tremendously all day, hit a string of solid shots leaving himself with an 8-foot putt for the title. With the pressure intensifying and the crowds gazing on, he managed to hold his nerve holing out for a par 5 to claim the win.
