Golfers across the country were pitted against each other, for the first time, in the same open tournament this summer. The aim, to find the nation’s ultimate pairs team. After 8 weeks of qualification, the top 24 pairs from the leading clubs in the UK batted it out on the Twenty Ten Course at Celtic Manor in the final on October 14th.
The format was simple; a pairs strokeplay competition but with a difference. Teams entered their scores via the award-wining VPAR app at any point in the 8 weeks. Inputting scores on their own iPhone devices, players were kept up-to-date with real-time leaderboards, informing them exactly what was required in their bid to qualify for the final.
The ultimate pairs’ team is a title rarely bestowed upon amateur golfers. However at a rain-soaked Celtic Manor Resort, this is exactly what was on offer.
Despite the conditions, the standard of scoring was excellent. Mitchell (24) and De Mel (22) set the clubhouse lead at 8-under par, leaving the remaining pairs able to see what they had to beat.
The Team of Mackie – Monaghan from Wentworth made a late charge up the leaderboard and with a crowd gathered around the 18th, they had a chance to take it to a play off. However the pressure got to them and James Mitchell and his playing partner Priyan De Mel from The Grove held on to secure the title by 1 shot. The completion was extremely tight throughout the day with just 7 shots separating the top 10.
After the prize giving ceremony De Mel had this to say: "If it wasn’t for the app I would not have had such excitement. It’s the app that’s made the day."
