The stunning Jumierah Golf Estates in Dubai was host to the 24th Audi quattro Cup World Final 2014, complete with its new Club House which opened in time for the DP World Tour Championship held only two weeks previously. Henrik Stenson secured victory for the second year running in the European Tour event, and the teams from South Africa (2013 Group A winners) and Guatemala (2013 Group B winners) were hoping to emulate Stenson’s back to back victories for their respect countries.
58 teams from 52 countries were represented in Dubai, having qualified from their country finals earlier in the year and from more than 965 qualification tournaments. The teams were spilt into two handicap categories – A and B, and competed over 36 holes over two tournament days.
There was a lot of excitement amongst the competitors knowing that friends and family back home were watching the scores come in live online. Day one ended with Taiwan leading Group A and China leading Group B, one point and three points ahead respectively, followed closely by Qatar and United Kingdom in Group A and Netherlands and Japan in Group B.
Both half way leads proved to be enough to hold on and clinch the championship after a spectacular few days in the Dubai December heat. In Group B Netherlands were fighting all the way, and at one point were just the points off but the Chinese managed to hang on for glory. Taiwan, on the other hand, cruised to victory in Group A knowing that their nearest rivals Uruguay weren’t quite close enough to put the pressure on.
Special mention must also go to the team from Italy who secured the gross score prize, with an impressive 68 points. The Italians were waiting anxiously at the Club House to see what score the Taiwanese duo would post on their last hole, and confirm whether or not they would be crowned gross winners. The Italians, to their delight, managed to clinch victory on a countback, the Taiwanese coming agonisingly close to the gross / net double.
An unbelievable event and once again great to be the official worldwide scoring partner at what is our 4th World Final.
