For the 3rd straight year, VPAR was supporting the Arnold Palmer Invitational at the Monday Pro-Am. The always anticipated event at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill did not disappoint with the winner being determined by a USGA tiebreaker.
There were 28 groups of amateurs along with a pro in each group. The format was a team net, Best Ball competition. Plenty of impressive pros took the stage in Orlando, Florida. A few of these men included D.A. Points, Stewart Cink, Retief Goosen, and Arnold Palmer’s grandson, Sam Saunders. Quickly off the bat it was realized that the kid who grew up playing on his grandfather’s course was going to be a force to be reckoned with.
Team Saunders would end up finishing in 3rd place while Teams Beljan and Team Points would duke it out for the win. Back and forth the two pros and their teams were trading birdie for birdie through all 18 holes, watching the live leaderboard as they leapfrogged each other constantly. Both teams would finish an impressive 17 under par total 55 and don’t think that it was just them doing all the work. The amateurs that they were playing with were contributing big time and in clutch moments. Whether it be from off the tee, short chips, or long putts, these amateurs came to play.
In the end, Team Beljan and Team Points would finish tied. So it then came down to the always daunting USGA tiebreaker (last 9,6,3,1 holes on the back nine). In impressive fashion, both teams shot the same on the back 9 but it was through the last 6 holes where Team Beljan edged out their counterpart by a single stroke. Team Beljan won a well-deserved victory and would raise their trophies in pure bliss over the beautiful course that is Bay Hill.
