  1. To obtain a permit, you must be the land owner/agent or a state and local licensed contractor. Please note the following contract values:


  2. Per Job/Contract   Per Year
    Under $1,000 Local Business License  
    $1,001 - $7,500 Class "C" License with the State of VA $150,000
    $7,501 - $70,000 Class "B" License with the State of VA $500,000
    Over $70,000 Class "A" License with the State of VA Unlimited

  3. All work that requires permits also requires inspections.
  4. Some areas in our City require special environmental impact review permitting.
  5. The City of Hampton does not have copies of physical surveys of your property.
  6. You DO NOT need a permit to: paint, wallpaper, replace floor covering, replace kitchen cabinets, plumbing fixture replacement in the same location (other than gas water heater), window and door replacements of exact size in single family dwellings, driveways on private property ( if not in a Chesapeake Bay Preservation District), doghouses and playground equipment.
